New CofC, CSU scoring records

CofC and CSU
women set team scoring records

Led by senior Laura Fuenfstueck, the College of Charleston finished as the runner-up in this year’s Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic, held at Osprey Point and Oak Point, Feb. 26-28.
Fuenfstueck picked up her 5th career victory, breaking a school record previously held by former great Steffic Kirchmayre, who won four tournaments, 2006-09.
“Laura is really on her game right now,” said CofC Women’s Head Coach Jamie Futrell. “I knew she was going to have a great spring. She’s just an awesome player – there’s no other way to put it.”
The Cougars also set a school record as a team with a tournament-low round of 279 (-9) on the final day of the Kiawah Island Classic. Victoria Drechsler and Mary Fran Hillow both shot 69, Fuenfstueck shot a 70 and Victoria Huskey finished with a 71 to secure the scoring record and a runner-up finish.
Fuenfstueck kept up her outstanding play with a top 10 finish at the UNF Collegiate and then a runner-up finish in the Briar’s Creek Invitational. Mary Fran Hillow has also been playing well for the Cougars. She was 4th in the UNF Collegiate and tied for 17th in the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic.

CSU Women
The CSU Women also set a school scoring record at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Spring Classic with an even-par 288 in the final round. Junior Hayley McNeill set the program’s individual 54-hole scoring record with a four-under total of 212 to claim fifth-place in the field of 232 players.
CSU, which finished in 5th place in the tournament. also got an outstanding performance from Emelie Flink, who tied for 11th. McNeill (70 (-2)), Shelby Thompson (71 (-1)) and Emelie Flink (72 (E)) all posted third round totals of par or better to pace Matt Cram-Smith’s club and surpass the program record of two-over par 290, set in the 1999-2000 season.
“They were really excited and I was excited,” CSU head coach Matt Cram-Smith said. “It was one of those days where it seemed like everybody was playing pretty well. It was kind of what we were expecting. I was really proud of Hannah (Barger) toughing it out. She didn’t hit it great today but for her to come in at 75 really helped us. Otherwise, we wouldn’t have shot the school record. It was definitely a team effort.”

CofC Men
The Cof C Men finished 10 and 11th in their first two tournaments of the spring. They were led by William Rainey and Parker Derby at the Southwestern Invitational. They both tied for 11th individually. Rainey led the team again at the Schenkel with a 12th place finish.
“We are really close to playing well,” said Head Coach Mark McEntire after the Schenkel.
He noted that the Cougars were leading the tournament after the first round and the team is playing three freshman every week, and “we have an extremely bright future.”

The CSU Men’s team began the spring season at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Invitational in Aiken. Jacques Wilson led the team with a tie for 36th. Andrew Novak of Wofford (Mt. Pleasant) tied for 9th (70-68-73–211), and Jamie Wilson of the University of South Carolina (80-70-70–220) tied for 36th. In CSU’s next tournament, the General Hackler in Myrtle Beach, the team was led by Jake Ezell, who tied for 15th. Austin James tied for 28th.

Citadel Women
The Citadel Women’s team had an eighth place finish in March at the Benbow Invitational. They were led by Renata Sucha, who tied for 22nd. Three other Citadel golfers, Marina Grimal, Cameron Little and Andrea Hoos, finished in the top 40. Little led the team at the Edwin Watts / Kiawah Island Classic, shooting 80-79-78–237.
