If you are looking for the only 27 hole course in the Charleston area, the Golf Club at Wescott Plantation is the answer.  The course is located about one mile off Dorchester Road on the border of Summerville and North Charleston.  When you have found the roundabout on Wescott Blvd, you have found Wescott Plantation.
The course, which opened in November of 2000, is split up into three different nines. The names of the three nines, Black Robin, Burn Kill and Oak Forest, were derived from the history of the site. Judging by the reaction of the members when they hear Black Robin is included in the daily rotation, I would have to say that it is the toughest of the three.
The golf course winds its way through trees and housing developments. You will find that you never have to worry about an errant shot from any hole other than the one you are playing. Every time I have played Wescott, the Tifsport fairways have been immaculate. All fairways are well marked with yardages on sprinkler heads approximately every 20 yards. Most fairways will also have a stake at the 150 yard mark. Cart paths are also marked every 50 yards from 250 yards and in. I do find the Tifeagle greens a bit hard. If approach shots are not high enough, chances are they will run through the green. On the plus side, 26 of the 27 holes are approachable with shots rolling onto the front of the green. The greens do roll very true. Good luck reading the subtle contours.
I found hole #5 on Black Robin very challenging. It's a par 5 which can play from 442 to 565 yards depending on which of the 5 tee areas is chosen; it also provides a second shot which requires a carry over marshland. If you don’t hit a decent drive, the decision is whether to try to carry the marsh or not. Risk reward is high. If your second shot has cleared, you’re left with a short approach shot and very possible birdie. If you had to lay up, now you have a 200 yard approach and par would be a good score.
My favorite hole on Burn Kill is par 4 #7 which plays 344 yards from the middle tees. An average drive will leave an uphill approach of less than 150 yards with a pond to carry. Take an extra half club to avoid the bunker that guards the front right of the elevated green. This is just a very pleasing looking golf hole.
The signature hole is #8 on Oak Forest. It's a par 3 that plays from 115 to 200 yards and has a lake that runs down the entire left side. My suggestion is to aim at the tree just front right of the green and hope it draws a little. If it doesn’t, a dry chip and putt is a much better chance at par than anything wet to the left.
Wescott Plantation does have an ample driving range and putting green. The electric golf carts, although not equipped with GPS, have more than enough get up and go. Cart service is provided during most times. Free bottled water is placed at hole #1 tee box on all three nines. Food and beverage service is available at the turn with prices in the reasonable range.
The 27 hole design of Wescott makes it stand out from any other area course. If you play 3 times without getting the same two nine rotation, it’s like playing three different courses. I find Wescott Plantation one of the higher quality courses with some of the most reasonable rates in the Charleston area. A must-play for players of all abilities.
